Recent changes in power networks such as a stronger need for interconnection and the rise of distributed generation result in an increasing demand for protection against high fault currents. Superconducting fault current limiters provide a solution for handling such faults. The application of a superconducting fault current limiter in a power network leads to a reduction in a hazard potential and savings in the switchgear equipment. This paper presents the design of a conduction cooled 6 kV superconducting fault current limiter.
